Process industries, such as oil and gas, chemicals, pulp and paper, steel and aluminum, and their associated convertors contribute more than €3 trillion annually to the world economy.

The sector is continuing to recover from the crisis of 2008/9, with revenue growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.9 percent over the near term, according to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited. Higher prices and improving global economic conditions, leading to increased demand, have contributed to this growth.

Looking ahead, markets including China, India and Brazil are anticipated to dominate the scene, with Korea following closely. And while demand in the United States and Europe is expected to be moderate, higher prices will likely translate into stronger revenues for chemical companies in these markets. Social trends such as sustainable housing and agriculture are also helping to fuel activity.

It still remains that the sector’s earnings are among the most sensitive to changes in economic growth because any slowdown in demand for finished goods feeds through quickly to suppliers of basic materials. The Middle East and Asia will continue to strengthen their positions as the new global centers of production, with US producers experiencing some relief due to new shale-derived feedstocks. A continued weakening of the U.S. dollar, a potential slowdown of growth in China/Asia and an escalation of the European credit crisis could dampen mid-term growth prospects.
